Navigating the current film business is more difficult than ever before. Rapidly-changing technology, and a greatly over-crowded marketplace have lead to an industry in which anyone can make a film now, but few can make a living. CLAPBOARD JUNGLE is a documentary intended to serve as a survival guide for the modern independent filmmaker. Featuring interviews with dozens of directors, producers, writers, actors, distributors, festival programmers, publicity persons and much more, while following one filmmaker’s personal journey, this is a film created to help people stay afloat in a risky business.
With the goal of delivering a film that is both educational and entertaining, production will continue until Fall 2015, toward a mid-2016 release. More than just a film, CLAPBOARD JUNGLE is being produced as an immersive educational experience, with hours of additional interviews and material eventually available via the website, and special edition DVDs & BluRays.
Production so far has been accomplished with a very limited team, with the majority of footage obtained by director/producer Justin McConnell. This team will grow as time goes on, as it is early days still.
In addition to operating his production/post company UNSTABLE GROUND for almost 15 years, Justin is an accomplished artist who splits his time equally in multiple forms of media – as a producer/director of feature films and home entertainment, in providing a growing list of high-profile clients with every production/post solution available, as the lead programmer of the monthly horror short-film festival LITTLE TERRORS (which he co-runs with Rue Morgue Magazine), as a Programmer & Print Traffic for TORONTO AFTER DARK FILM FESTIVAL, and as an acquisitions exec for Canadian distributor INDIECAN ENTERTAINMENT. Additionally, he has taught post-production for both Raindance Canada and the Trebas Institute.
He has four feature films in distribution: the well-received horror/thriller The Collapsed (released in over 12 countries worldwide, via companies such as Anchor Bay & Lions Gate), the counter-culture documentary Skull World (available worldwide), the dark comedy Junkie (producer only, recently released in multiple territories), and the documentary Working Class Rock Star. Additionally, he is an executive producer on the upcoming crime-thriller Cold Deck (starring Paul Sorvino and Robert Knepper), and has over a dozen films in development as either producer or director, including Mark of Kane, Tripped, The Eternal and Lifechanger. CLAPBOARD JUNGLE is his third feature-length documentary. For more information, find him on IMDb, Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, Youtube, or Vimeo.
An award-winning filmmaker, with a feature (Android Re-Enactment) and several shorts (Greater Than, M is for Merman, Garlic Bread Man vs Superbo Lasagna Man) under his belt. Darryl’s critical eye and past knowledge lend a keen sense of balance to the production. Find him at his company homepage, or on IMDb, Twitter, Facebook and Vimeo.
An actress (Lively, The Resurrection of Clarence Neveldine), and frequent film festival employee (Blood in the Snow), Ali has helped with production a great deal thus far. Find her via her homepage, Facebook, or Twitter.
